In today's fast paced world, it's hard to see what's right in front of you. We miss out on what makes a place special. We must see the culture authenticity within our communities and share it so that others can experience it, too. To do that, we must provide the local gems to locals and travelers. This is particularly challenging since it relies heavily on local residents' recommendations.
I was involved in every aspect of this project from beginning to end. I conducted research, interviews, mapping, personas, sketching, wireframes, high fidelity and prototyping.
The solution is to provide a platform for people to share hidden gems about their local community. Sharing local spots that have impacted someone will bring joy to another. Continuing to run tests with users and make the necessary changes will allow us to keep the user engaged and happy using the product.
Qualitative research was conducted at the beginning of this process in the form of screener surveys and user interviews. From there, the research was synthesized into an affinity map, empathy map and personas.
What is a user flow?
A user flow is the path taken by a prototypical user on a website or app to complete a task. The user flow takes them from point "A" to point "B" through a series of steps toward a successful outcome.
Why are they important?
User flows are important because they take the user on a journey through the product and keep them on task. This is crucial for keeping the user on task in the testing phase.
About the flow
This user flow is the first flow that every user of the app will have to complete. It shows how first time users will enter the app and sign up as a new user. This flow demonstrates the user signing up through an email and answering some questions about their local area before completing the flow.
Early on in the design phase, I conducted gorilla testing from sketches to find pain points for potential users .
A wireframe is a diagram or a set of diagrams that consists of simple lines and shapes representing the skeleton of a website or an application.
Wireframes are important to start the digital process of the app. These wireframes were created from the sketches.
The app was designed to be accessible and easy to use by a wide range of people. Large images, colorful buttons and easy to understand icons help achieve this.
Inspiration was drawn from several successful travel apps including TripAdviser, AirBnB and Roadtrippers. Keeping with the familiarity of these already successful apps makes the user feel confident and, as a result, will use the app more often.
The color palette that was decided on for this app is a mix of blues, greens, grays, and whites. Studies show that both males and females gravitate to blues and greens. Color contrast tests were performed several times to make sure all colors used passed with a AA compliance.
Be a little more like a tourist at home, and a local on the road!
