The app that gives you the most of your museum and gallery experience.
Museums and art galleries want to increase customer satisfaction while guests view paintings, sculptures and installations, in person. The design constraints focus on the in-person viewing experience and the solution needs to be designed as a mobile app or mobile-optimized website.
For this design sprint, I was in charge of mapping a flow, the lightning demo, crazy 8's, solution sketches, storyboard sketches, designing the high fidelity prototype and the prototype testing.
The solution at GalleryPal is to design an app that is easy for the guests to use while also providing a personal tour guide experience. Allowing the guests to scan QR codes around the museum or gallery and giving them the opportunity to listen to what interests them, solves the problem the guests were having.
// I recognized several insights while reading the research and watching the videos provided to me by GalleryPal. It is obvious that people are visiting these museums and galleries because they are interested and want to know more.
// Some guests try to do research beforehand, but get lost with information overload or go down the internet rabbit hole.
// With the information I gathered from the quotes, persona and interview with Lena Carroll (a tour guide at the Museum of Natural History), I was able to determine some key factors in what a user would want from GalleryPal.
// The user wants to hear a story, understand the context, learn about the technique or medium used by the artist and be taught something new.
// Get more from her visits
// Get quick information
// Get more out of her visits in order to have a better appreciation for the art

An end-to-end experience was mapped to address the problem and convey the solution.

A lightning demo was conducted to get inspiration and to look at other solutions to a similar problem. Two of the apps that were looked at for this demo were strongly related to the problem I am trying to solve. The last app was selected because it has screens that could present a solution to the problem.
The most critical screen for GalleryPal is the screen that allows the user to pick what they want to listen to. For the user, being able to decide on what they are personally interested in and giving them the opportunity to listen to what they want will make the guests more satisfied.
The sketch chosen was one that was very simple to keep with the minimalism theme of GalleryPal. The first screen shows how the user would scan the QR code under the artwork. This links the art to the correct audio. Once scanned, the user can choose what they want to listen to. When they tap on what they want to listen to, they’re transferred to the play screen. The play screen is the last of this solution. From the play screen, they can play, pause, rewind, fast-forward, as well as see the length of the audio.
GalleryPal is all about artwork and the experience along with it. I wanted to stick to a minimal desdign and let the art speak for itself.

The goal for this prototype is for the user to successfully work through the flow from the beginning to end. Having the user leave fulfilled and inspired are the ultimate goals.
The usability testing was conducted in-person and over Zoom with five different participants. The participants were men and women aging between 25-40 who use apps regularly.
Overall, all the participants I tested were able to move through the app easily and without hesitation. There are a few minor pain points that will be addressed when improving the app.
// Didn't like the wording "Leaving so soon?"
// Is it asking for the users overall museum experience or your experience with the app?
// Didn't like that the app would track the users location and would prefer not to be tracked
